Edit producing: skills and techniques (Glasgow)

This one day course is a hands-on workshop in edit producing/ directing; covering everything you need to know from how to view and manage your rushes to how to tackle commentary writing and direct pick-ups.

The course will be tailored to the individual needs of each trainee, and will involve a thorough explanation of the logging platform Forscene as well as any bespoke elements requested in advance or on the day.

The course is suitable for both complete novices and for those who have worked in several edits but want to build their confidence and skills level.

  • Overview of edit producer role and what it entails.
  • How to view and manage your rushes (including intro to forscene and practical exercises).
  • Working relationships in the edit – managing up, down and across.
  • Edit timetables – examples of workable timetables, and how to manage your time and your editor’s time effectively.
  • Finding good sync, good characters and good scenes – how to do this – including practical exercises.
  • Writing voice-over – how to do this, different styles, practical exercises.
  • Directing pick-up shoots – how to do this, when to do this.
  • Editing the pre-title.
  • Music – how music changes a scene, dealing with composers, choosing commercial or library music.
  • Viewings – what they entail and what to do next.
  • Online – what is entailed and how to run it.

Cancellation Policy

Cancellations must be in writing and must be received at least seven days prior to the course date or the full fee will be charged. ITF reserves the right to cancel courses without liability, and delegates will be offered an alternative date or full refund.
