AP Survival Guide

This one day course will give an overview of every stage of making a factual TV show at Assistant Producer level, from pre-production to broadcast, and explain the AP role in the whole process. The importance of good written communication skills and being aware of legal and ethical considerations will be emphasised throughout as will foundation skills for the future directors and producers.

Course content


  • Working with contributors – The course will cover editorial guidance such as being truthful, being aware of bias and working with vulnerable people, including children.  Communicating with potential contributors, over the phone, in person and over email: approach and tone to convince contributors to take part and tips of how manage their expectations from the start.
  • Shooting Contributor Tapes – How to carry out an interview so that you get great sync, as well as shooting a simple 7 shot sequence that will tell a story and cut together like a dream. This session will teach the foundation skills required for good self shooting APs, who would like to become Self-Shooting Directors.
  • Communicating with your team – How to have clear and effective communication skills, from flagging concerns, to knowing when to manage up. This course will give tips on the best ways of going about this.
  • Preparing for the shoot – Working with locations and contributors to plan the shoot. Working with your Producer, Director and team to make sure that shoots are well planned and that they deliver ‘the story’, whilst being in budget and aware of potential hazards.
  • The AP role on aShoot – As a shooter and as assistant to the producer/director. Writing shoot notes and story beat sheets.
  • The AP role inpost-shoot process – Logging effectively so that the editor will love you, fact checking and organising research notes so that your Producer will be singing your praises.
  • Understanding the edit and post production – Supporting contributors and colleagues post shoot, through to broadcast.
