If you’re nurturing the seed of a panel game, evolving a sketch show format or giving notes on a third draft script; whether you’re responsible for ‘exclusive online material’ or you’re about to take over the reins on a returning comedy series, this course is for you.
Crammed with examples and inspiration from writers, creative allies, brand new and classic series, successful pilots and not-so-successful starters – this day long course looks at what works – what else might work – what isn’t going to work – and why. Practical armoury for transforming funny ideas into irresistible pitches and commissions.
• Sitcom and comedy narrative: long form scripted comedy. Honing in on which characters & situations work, and why. Looking at new ideas – working alongside your writer/s, so you really get to know your characters and their circumstances.
• Sketch shows: short form scripted comedy. Finding a winning theme for your series – inspiring your writers. How setting boundaries/creating rules can spark great comedy.
• Panel games & quizzes: How many teams? How many rounds? Who’ll be on who’s side?… Testing and retesting your format – adding even more laughs while you’re at it.
• It’s comedy!: if you’re having fun – it’ll come across on screen/on air. Practical advice on choosing the cast and crew for your show – and steering your production from prep for the pilot to the last show in the series.
